Ex-Beatle George Harrison is recovering from stab wounds at home after being discharged from hospital.

Mr Harrison was cleared to leave his private room in Harefield Hospital, west London, on Saturday night after being examined by a chest specialist.

The 56-year-old musician left hospital with his wife Olivia and is thought to have returned to their mansion in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

A hospital spokesman said: "Harefield Hospital can confirm that George Harrison has been discharged from hospital after being assessed as medically fit by a consultant thoracic surgeon.

"Both Mr Harrison and his wife would like to thank hospital staff and the many people who have sent them kind thoughts and wishes over the past few days."

The star was taken to hospital on Thursday with an injured right lung after the early-morning knife attack at his home.

Murder charge

Mr Harrison also suffered slash wounds as he fought with an intruder in his 120-room house on the secluded 34-acre Friar Park estate.

However, he is expected to make a full physical recovery within weeks.

The ex-Beatle is thought to have been saved from more serious injury when his wife hit the knifeman over the head with a table lamp, knocking him unconscious.

Mrs Harrison, 51, also needed treatment for minor head wounds.

The couple's 21-year-old son Dhani was at the house at the time of the attack, but was not hurt.

A 33-year-old man appeared in court on Friday charged with the attempted murder of Harrison and his wife.

Father-of-two Michael Abram was bailed by magistrates in Oxford to be detained at a medium secure psychiatric unit under section three of the Mental Health Act.

Abram spoke only to confirm his name and address during the 45-minute hearing.

Hawaii stalker

The Harrisons have lived at their Friar Park home, a former nunnery close to the centre of Henley, for more than 20 years.

Security at the estate is tight, with high walls surrounding the grounds. It is also close to Henley's police station.

The attack came almost exactly 19 years after fellow Beatle John Lennon was shot dead outside his New York apartment by an obsessed fan.

The two other Beatles - Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr - have sent messages of support to Mr Harrison.

It has since emerged that a woman was arrested on Mr Harrison's estate in Hawaii, a week before the attack.

Cristin Keleher has been released on bail charged with burglary and theft.
