Diana fund helps needy youngsters

Diana Diana's fund has raised 110m so far

Young people's charities are to benefit from the latest slice of cash from the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

Grants totalling 3.5m will be given to 19 charities who help young people in care, youngsters with a parent in prison, young refugees and young people who have lost a parent.

"We have sought out groups of young people who have suffered from tragedy or trauma and whose problems are largely unrecognised," said Dr Andrew Purkis, the fund's chief executive.

Over 25m worldwide

"We want to bring them hope. The princess helped many vulnerable and damaged people feel wanted, not forgotten. The fund in its own way continues her work."

The UK-wide grants range from 17,000 for a one-year project to almost 300,000 for some longer-term schemes.

Since its launch in September 1997, the Fund has received more than 110m and allocated more than 25m worldwide.

About 20m of the fund's income has come from individual and public donations and fund-raising events. Most of the remainder is linked to commercial sales. One third of the fund's grants go overseas.
