The heart of Manchester city centre was ripped out by the IRA bomb.
More than 200 people were injured and it has been said it was a miracle no-one died.
This bomb-proof post box is still standing in the renovated shopping centre.
The city's Marks and Spencer store was destroyed in the blast.
Marks and Spencer has been rebuilt at a cost of �85m to become the chain's biggest store worldwide.
The �1.2bn redevelopment project has given Manchester a modern make-over.
New streets and buildings have replaced old architecture from the 1960s and 1970s.
Sam Hughes was seven months old when the bomb went off while he was shopping with his mother. He escaped with only cuts to his hands. On Thursday Sam will cut the ribbon at the official opening ceremony |
