Bridge to Anglesey reopened
News image The work on the Menai Suspension Bridge led to traffic jams

The Menai Suspension Bridge linking Anglesey to the mainland has reopened after being closed to motorists for nine weeks.

The bridge - built by Thomas Telford - had been closed for essential repairs, leaving just one route open across the Menai Strait.

Commuters are once again able to drive across the bridge - bringing to an end weeks of rush hour traffic jams.

Major works

Work on the bridge - which involved major improvements to the road deck - was completed a month ahead of schedule.

Twenty-four-hour working and favourable weather conditions meant fewer problems in removing the deck and renewing the steel structure.

Traffic to and from Anglesey had been forced to use the only alternative route, the Britannia Bridge, causing severe tailbacks at peak periods.
