British tourists shot in Thailand
News image The two victims are being treated at a Bangkok hospital

An RAF officer and a British woman are recovering in hospital after being shot in a Mafia-style attack while on holiday in Thailand.

Wing Commander Don Brown and the woman, who has not been named, were shot by a motorcycle-riding gunman while on holiday in Cha-Am, south of the capital city of Bangkok, on Tuesday.

They are recovering in hospital in Bangkok, where their condition is not said to be "life-threatening".

Last night a Foreign Office spokesman said: "I can confirm two British nationals received gunshot wounds in Cha-Am.

"They are currently receiving treatment in hospital in Thailand."

Man arrested

The spokesman said they had been innocent bystanders when the gunman struck, and a man had been arrested by local police in connection with the incident.

Their insurance companies are making arrangements to fly them home to Britain for further treatment.

The two were members of an eight-strong tour party when the shooting took place.

"The British nationals appear to have been unfortunate victims of a local incident," said the Foreign Office spokesman.

Wing Cdr Brown, 43, who was on holiday with his wife, is based at RAF Kinloss, Morayshire.

An RAF spokesman said: "We are giving his wife and family all the support we can at the moment.

"The forces' community is very strong and I am sure he will be getting a lot of support and help from his colleagues."
