The Duke is passionate about sporting activities |
The Duke of Edinburgh has marked his 85th birthday with a private ceremony at Windsor Castle. A royal gun salute was fired at Hyde Park and the Tower of London, and the Union Flag was flown on government buildings.
Prince Philip was born on 10 June, 1921, the youngest child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.
The royal couple will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary next year.
Among the public celebrations of the Prince's personal milestone taking place next week, the Massed Bands of the Royal Marines will perform a Beating Retreat on London's Horse Guards Parade on 15 June.
He will join the Queen earlier that day at a national service of thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral to mark her official 80th birthday.
He has fulfilled an average of 370 official engagements each year, excluding those accompanying the Queen.
Two years ago he undertook 289 solo engagements in the UK and abroad and is patron or president of around 800 organisations.
