Memorabilia from the world famous building, due to be demolished next year, will be auctioned off by online auctioneers QXL.com.

QXL will open the bidding early next year. But Internet users can pre-register their bid and will receive a complete inventory of items available before it released to the general public.

Commercial director of Wembley National Stadium, Paul Fletcher, said: "The internet will allow us to reach the most amount of people and will give the auction a wider appeal.

"Callers have expressed a desire to own everything from the Twin Towers to the taps in the players' dressing room."

He said that money raised from the auction would go towards the �475m needed to replace the stadium.

But a spokesman for the Football Supporters Association said it was a pity that auction would be open to a "restricted audience".

"There should be a telephone line so everyone in England has the opportunity to make a bid," he said.

Jim Rose, QXL.com's chief executive officer, said the internet was far more accessible to the public than an auction house such as Sotheby's.

"Wembley is an international icon - by having an online auction we're giving people all over the world a chance to own part of it.
