Iraq war hero Private Johnson Beharry is to separate from his wife Lynthia, the Ministry of Defence has said. Pte Beharry, 25, who was awarded the Victoria Cross last month, admitted the trauma of his war experiences had caused "difficulties" in his marriage.
"We've come to a crossroads and are now taking some time apart to consider our futures," they said in a statement.
Grenada-born Pte Beharry was the first living soldier to be awarded the VC since 1969.
He was given the honour after twice guiding colleagues to safety while under attack in Iraq.
Pte Beharry was seriously injured in the second incident and left in a coma.
His wife Lynthia, 23, is a civilian worker for the MoD's medical supply department.
In their statement, issued through the MoD, the couple said: "We've been together for eight years but sadly there have been difficulties in our relationship.
"We have been through a lot and it has not been easy, either for Johnson in Iraq and then recovering from his wounds, or Lynthia facing the uncertainty of his deployment and then recovery.
"We hope to be given the privacy to work this through for ourselves, with the support of our friends and families."
