AA defends 'disabled' job attack

The AA says it is looking at performance
A trade union has reported the AA to the Disability Rights Commission alleging it targeted disabled workers for redundancy when cutting jobs.

It is the latest move in the GMB's protests against job losses.

The Commission has confirmed it is looking into a written request from the union to investigate the claim.

The AA has denied targeting disabled staff. It said 400 under-performing roadside recovery staff had a choice between 18,000 redundancy or training.

The GMB says it has been approached by 13 disabled workers who had been told they were losing their jobs.

A spokeswoman from the Disability Rights Commission said it was looking into the complaint following a written request from the GMB.

The AA said it was not targeting disabled workers but is carrying out a business review of performance management.

Of its 3,500 patrol staff, a spokeswoman said, about 400 were below expected performance levels.

They would be given a choice between a one-off 18,000 redundancy payment and 16 weeks training and development. If they did not reach acceptable levels, they would be dismissed.

The GMB represented only 5% of the staff, while 85% were members of the Automobile Association Democratic Union, she added.

The GMB highlighted AA employee Richard Donald, 51, from Yeovil, Somerset, who suffered health problems following an insect bite. The union said he had been offered redundancy or training.

But the AA said it took its employee responsibilities seriously, was aware of Mr Donald's disabilities, had put support in place and adjusted his performance measures to take his disability into account.
