More snowfall is expected across the UK, after cold weather in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England brought chaos. The BBC Weather Centre said 14cm of snow was reported at Aviemore, and 10cm in Northern Ireland and near Cardiff.
It said a light covering of snow will fall on the Midlands and south-east England later, with ice in many areas.
More than 460 Welsh schools and around 100 in Scotland were closed. Over 4,000 Scottish homes have lost electricity.
And hundreds of people are stranded on Bodmin Moor, in Cornwall, following a crash which has closed a snow-hit road.
More than 100 vehicles have ground to a halt on the blocked road after the crash, which involved dozens of cars.
The BBC Weather Centre said Northern Ireland and north-west Scotland have been hit by 70mph gales, exceeding 100mph on mountains.
Predicting the outlook for the early hours of Saturday, BBC Weather Forecaster Peter Gibbs said the worst weather had passed for Northern Ireland, Wales, south-west England and south Wales, all of which had seen treacherous conditions.
However, he said northerly winds would hit western and northern parts of Scotland, as well as Northern Ireland.
And, forecasting conditions on Friday night, Mr Gibbs said: "It will be another chilly night for all, with ice forming across many areas."
Following Friday's weather, a spokesman for power firm Scottish Hydro Electric said it had drafted in 50 extra engineers to help restore power to the affected homes.
Blocked roads
The Welsh school closures were largely in the south Wales valleys, Bridgend and Carmarthenshire, while in Scotland schools in the north-east and Northern Isles were affected.
Grampian Police have dealt with a series of accidents, and reported road closures around Braemar and Crathie, with other routes affected by drifting snow and heavy ice.
The Skye Bridge was closed to high-sided vehicles.
A South Wales Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said it was dealing with several road accidents.
Devon and Cornwall Police said there had been a lot of accidents and some road blockages due to snow across the South West.
The BBC Weather Centre said heavy snow could move into southern Scotland and northern England during Friday.
