Grants give pupils taste of WWII
Winston Churchill signs to crowds on VE day
Many schools will take part around the 60th anniversary of VE day
Pupils are to be given a taste of life in World War II through lottery grants to mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day.

Some 27 schools in England will benefit from cash for projects such as building a replica Anderson bomb shelter and visits to former battlefields.

The 306,380 from the 10m "Their Past, Your Future" Big Lottery Fund comes as the UK prepares to mark 8 May 1945 - the day victory in Europe was assured.

Big Lottery officials said it was vital to preserve the memories of the war.

Learning values

"The Their Past, Your Future scheme will enable thousands of young people to undertake exciting projects that will bring history to life, not just in the classroom but also on former battlefields and in the streets of their communities and cities," spokesman Stephen Dunmore said.

"By talking to World War Two veterans, researching historical events, creating exhibits for their local community and visiting historical sites, young people will be able to preserve the important memories of the war for future generations and learn to appreciate the value of their freedom."

Other plans for the money include running sample 1940s school lessons, where children can dress in period costume and take part in gas mark drills.

Cambridgeshire County Council is to receive one of the largest handouts, totalling 17,111, with more than 10,400 also pledged to the London Borough of Redbridge.

VE Day marks 8 May 1945, when Germany formally surrendered to the Allies. The Japanese surrender, marked by VJ Day, followed three months later on 15 August.
