Driving tests wait is 'too long'
L-plate
Waiting lists for driving tests are as long as three months
Learner drivers are having to wait as long as three months to take their test, according to one of Britain's leading driving schools.

Some candidates are facing waits of 13 weeks, more than twice the target set by the Driving Standards Agency, according to the figures from BSM.

The average UK waiting time is nearly 10 weeks, BSM added.

"The situation in many parts of the UK remains a disgrace," said BSM managing director Paul Atkinson.

He said candidates are unable to expect a date earlier than three or four months ahead.

APRIL 2004 AVERAGE WAIT
London and southern England - 13.6 weeks
Midlands - 10.9 weeks
North of England - 9.7 weeks
Wales and west of England - 7.2 weeks
Scotland - 4.7 weeks

Mr Atkinson went on: "The service the DSA offers learners is still disappointingly poor.

"Many learner drivers desperately need to pass their tests to take up a new job, to go to university or college, or for a dozen other very practical reasons.

"The DSA's failure to meet its own targets is putting those people's lives on hold."
