Young 'badly portrayed by media'

Young people are unfairly labelled yobs, campaigners say
Children's groups are launching a campaign at Westminster to improve the portrayal of young people in the media.

Organisers say a whole generation is being stigmatised as yobs. The launch comes as research by Mori suggested a third of press articles about young people were about crime and 71% saw young people negatively.

The drive is backed by children's minister Margaret Hodge, the Youth Justice Board, Young People Now magazine and the Children's Society.

HAVE YOUR SAY
I do think young people (including myself) do get stereotyped by the media, all too frequently
Amanda Downes, London

The campaigners say the young are being unfairly targeted and should not be linked automatically with anti-social behaviour.

They have drawn up a draft code to encourage more balanced reporting of young people, with an award scheme for those providing positive images of the young.

Campaigns already exist to improve the media portrayal of other groups, including older people, ethnic minorities and those with disabilities.
