One ticket agent sold two tickets worth 20 for Mamma Mia! for 100 |
A campaign is being started to make people aware of their rights when buying theatre tickets. From Wednesday, theatregoers will be informed of the law when buying theatre tickets from an agent and what questions to ask.
The law says before you buy a ticket you must be told if there is any restricted view, the seat location, and the face value of the ticket.
The campaign is being launched by Westminster City Council.
The city council receives many complaints each year from tourists who have been cheated by ticket agents.
Amongst the scams the council was told about were 100 charged for two 10 restricted view tickets for Mamma Mia last October, 70 for two 20 tickets for Les Miserables in May this year, and 112.50 for three 16.00 tickets for Tonight's the Night in July.
Cllr Danny Chalkley, from Westminster City Council, said: "Unfortunately unscrupulous agents are using every trick in the trade to rip people off.
"Far too many people are paying over the odds for theatre and concert tickets when they shouldn't and it is ruining their experience of London."
The campaign is supported by the Society of London Theatres and the Theatre Museum, in Covent Garden.
