Families of the 67 Britons killed in the World Trade Center attacks are to meet an American lawyer on Thursday. Kenneth Feinberg, from the US Department of Justice, will decide how much compensation they will receive.
He is head of the September 11 Compensation Fund, set up by the US Government to compensate the injured and friends and family of those killed.
There are nearly 7,000 claims to deal with and so far the average pay-out in the US has been $1.8m (1m).
Most of the claims relate to young single people who died.
Higher earners
Mr Feinberg must decide how much to pay victims' girlfriends and boyfriends.
There is no limit to the total amount of compensation Mr Feinberg can award.
But the total cost is expected to be $5bn (3bn).
Mr Feinberg must take into account how much victims would have earned in the rest of their lives.
And this has prompted criticism that the families of higher earners will receive more.
