Officer suspended over race claim
Cheshire Police
Cheshire Police say the suspension is not connected to the programme
A police officer serving with one of three forces criticised in a BBC-TV documentary has been suspended for allegedly using racist language.

Cheshire Police say the suspension is not connected to Tuesday's broadcast of The Secret Policeman.

The officer who serves on the Chester and Ellesmere Port Division has been suspended pending an internal disciplinary inquiry.

Six officers, including one from Cheshire, resigned after the showing.

Two further officers, from the Greater Manchester and North Wales forces, remain suspended from duty over allegations raised in the programme, in which an undercover reporter exposed racism within the ranks.

The Police Complaints Authority has launched an investigation into the behaviour of the eight officers named in the documentary and that of a police trainer.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said the force "is committed to challenging any type of racist behaviour or attitude, including the use of racist language, both inside the organisation and within the communities it serves".

BBC reporter Mark Daly, 28, spent five-and-a-half months working as a policeman with Greater Manchester Police before being arrested on suspicion of obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception and damaging police property.

He is due to answer bail in November.

The BBC has said any pay Mr Daly received had been kept in a separate bank account and was to be returned to the force at the end of the investigation.

It has also offered to pay for damage caused to Mr Daly's bullet-proof vest, which was altered to hold a pinhole camera and battery pack.

He told BBC News Online: "Working undercover using the latest hi-tech covert filming equipment meant I could expose any of my fellow officers who held racist views or behaved in a racist manner.

"The extremity of some of the racism I encountered from these recruits beggared belief."

"Racist abuse like "Paki" and "Nigger" were commonplace for these PCs.

"The idea that white and Asian members of the public should be treated differently because of their colour was not only acceptable for some, but preferable."
