There are some parallels between Faliraki and Blackpool

Superintendent Andy Rhodes and Inspector John Donnelly will advise the Greek authorities on ways of cutting down on binge drinking and disorderly behaviour by young British holidaymakers.

The officers, from Blackpool, will tell Greek police on the island of Rhodes about an initiative in the resort which has reduced problem drinking this summer.

Senior Greek police officers have complained of continuous drunk and disorderly behaviour among some young British holidaymakers.

The resort has attracted a great deal of negative publicity recently, with at least three British tourists forced to pay large fines to avoid jail.

Faliraki parties on

Before leaving, Supt Rhodes said: "I must stress that Blackpool should not be directly compared to Faliraki, although there are obviously some common issues such as people drinking excessively and engaging in criminal behaviour.

"Having gained valuable knowledge of the police issues we face in Blackpool as a British holiday resort, I'm certain we will have some ideas to offer."

The two men will be out on the streets of Faliraki to see if a scheme pioneered in Blackpool will work in Rhodes.

The BBC's crime correspondent Neil Bennett said: "Under an initiative called Night Safe pub and bar owners agreed to stop tempting visitors with cheap drinks."
