'Discount' holiday cost an extra 90
Ski resort
The brochure advertised cut-price winter breaks
A leading travel operator has been ordered to scrap its holiday brochure after advertising "discount" breaks at inflated prices.

Thomson Holidays published the brochure in November to sell what it claimed were cut-price winter breaks.

But a couple who tried to book one of the breaks at a travel agent were told the price had risen to 90 more than that advertised in Thomson's standard brochure for the same six-month period.

After complaining to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) the couple were offered the holiday at the cheaper price.

After an investigation, the watchdog ordered Thomson to change its advertising to ensure discount brochure prices were always cheaper.

Consumers would expect "holidays booked from the reduced price brochure to be less than the cost of the equivalent holiday in the standard brochure," the ASA said.

Thomson, part of TUI UK, said the discount brochure had made it clear prices "may vary up and down" prior to booking.

Misleading advert

And the holiday in question had remained available at the advertised price for two months after the brochure was published.

Also on Wednesday, the ASA branded a P&O Ferries advert "misleading".

The advert said savings of up to 65% were available for people booking a crossing to France by a set date.

But the ASA received a complaint that it failed to make clear that the 65% discount was only available for departures from Dover between 0015 and 0245.

Upholding the complaint, the ASA said the advert had failed to "fully make clear the nature of the offer".
