14m boost to tackle domestic violence
Victim of domestic violence
Domestic abuse accounts for a quarter of violent crimes
An extra 14m is to be spent on tackling domestic violence, David Blunkett has announced.

The home secretary said the three-year cash injection would help crime and disorder reduction partnerships, which were "already working hard to tackle this unacceptable crime".

The government will also fund a local government association co-ordinator to help local authorities and police forces deal with domestic violence, which accounts for one out of every four violent crimes.

And a consultation paper due in the spring will consider how the law can be changed to bring men who beat their wives to justice.

Mr Blunkett said: "I believe in punishment as well as prevention.

"Two women a week die at the hands of a violent partner or ex-partner and untold damage is done to children in their family homes.

"We must bring the abusers to justice, and continue to invest in preventing domestic violence."

Home Office minister John Denham added: "Domestic violence cannot be tolerated.

"I applaud the efforts of all those who provide assistance and support to victims of domestic violence.

"It's essential all those working in this field contribute to the consultation, so the ensuing legislation can bring about long-term improvements."
