| Monday, 10 February, 2003, 08:29 GMT Dairy farmers lured to mid-west ![]() Dairy farmers may be looking for pastures new A campaign has begun to persuade British dairy farmers to move to the American mid-west. Officials from south Dakota will set out on a tour of the UK from Monday, encouraging British farmers to emigrate. They will portray the mid-west as a paradise for struggling dairy farmers where there are no milk quotas, no income tax and land is cheap. They will also highlight how a new cheese factory is being opened but there are not enough farmers to provide a supply of milk. 'Downside' Officials will begin their tour in Scotland and end it in Cornwall on Saturday. But BBC north America business correspondent Stephen Evans said there were downsides to moving to the area. These include the temperature, with current temperatures 20 degrees Fahrenheit below freezing. Dairy farmers in the UK are facing increasing pressures, with job loses and the closure of many farms. | See also: 05 Feb 03 | Europe 29 Nov 02 | England 15 Oct 02 | Wales 22 Aug 02 | Politics Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top UK stories now: Links to more UK stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
