| Sunday, 19 January, 2003, 05:28 GMT Kelly's Sri Lankan home raided ![]() Mr Kelly started in showbusiness as a teenager The Sri Lankan home of TV presenter Matthew Kelly has been raided by police. Officials seized 54 video tapes and a computer from the entertainer's home near Colombo, after a tip off from a journalist. The raid is not directly linked to a separate British police investigation into allegations of child abuse.
Mr Kelly, was held in connection with "historic allegations" of sexual abuse against boys last week in the UK. The entertainer emphatically denies the allegations. He has not been charged and was given police bail until 12 March. Frances Harrison, BBC correspondent in Colombo, said the Sri Lankan raid had been led by the country's child protection agency. Abuse inquiry Mr Kelly has been replaced on his hit show Stars in Their Eyes by Davina McCall, while UK police continue to investigate allegations of child abuse. Officers have also removed evidence from his home in Chiswick, west London. Mr Kelly, a father of two, had been due to host a series of celebrity specials, which are being filmed next week. But TV executives at Granada felt it best for Ms McCall to take over in the short term. The entertainer this week continued as Captain Hook in the pantomime Peter Pan at Birmingham's Repertory Theatre, only hours after being released on police bail. He was cheered as he took to the stage for the performance. Mr Kelly was arrested as part of the sex abuse inquiry that led to the conviction of pop mogul Jonathan King. King was jailed for seven years in November 2001 after he was found guilty of four indecent assaults and two serious sexual offences against boys, carried out in the 1980s. He was also registered as a sex offender and banned from working with children. |
