Listeners to the BBC Radio Four flagship programme have been making their nominations over Christmas.

The most nominated were William Caxton, Winston Churchill, Oliver Cromwell, Charles Darwin, Sir Isaac Newton and William Shakespeare.

Now listeners can vote by telephone for the Person of the Millennium - the result of which will be announced on the Today programme during the New Year's Day broadcast.

To vote for your choice of finalist, ring one of these numbers:

The call will cost no more than 10p and the lines are open until 1800 GMT on 30 December.

For UK and international users, there will be further opportunities throughout 1999 to nominate people of the Millennium in a variety of categories on BBC News Online.

News Online will be launching Your Millennium on 1 January 1999. Throughout the year visitors will be asked to vote for their choice of Person of the Millennium in a different category each month - starting in January with the Inventor of the Millennium.

Your Millennium will not be confined to British nominations. Any inventor in the world in the last 1,000 years qualifies.
