Many tabloid and broadsheet newspapers have identified the television presenter said to be at the centre of rape allegations made by Ulrika Jonsson.

With some exceptions, many papers devote several pages to the story after the presenter's name was inadvertently given out on Five (formerly Channel 5) on Wednesday.

Ulrika Jonsson herself has not named the man she alleges in her autobiography raped her 14 years ago.

Police have confirmed that a woman - not Ms Jonsson - has made a formal complaint of rape against the man, in a separate alleged incident.

Some papers also carry accounts from other women who claim to have been assaulted by the same man.

The BBC, in common with some areas of the press, has chosen not to name him.

The BBC's media correspondent Nick Higham said: "In the absence of a denial, some news organisations have decided it is safe to report the allegations."

Ms Jonsson repeated her claims in subsequent interviews and a Channel 4 documentary.

She also claimed that other women said they had been attacked by the man.

Her agent Melanie Cantor has denied Ms Jonsson set out to identify the man in question.

"There was never any clever planning," said Ms Cantor. "This was not something that was construed in any way to out anybody's name."

The agent was responding to a comment by PR guru Max Clifford that Ms Jonsson was "very media savvy".

'Quite ill'

The City of London police say that a woman - not Ms Jonsson - has made a formal complaint to them and they are investigating.

It is believed to be the same man Ms Jonsson has been alluding to.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said police also received an allegation from a second woman, who claimed the man indecently assaulted her last Wednesday.

She later withdrew the allegation.

In the documentary, The Truth About Men, Ms Jonsson said: "It frightened me a lot. I became quite ill for a period after that".

She also claimed she was in hospital for five days following the alleged assault.

The Five broadcaster who let the name slip during a live programme on Wednesday, Matthew Wright, has said he is "absolutely mortified" by his "slip of the tongue".
