I am indifferent about field sports... Sadly the whole debate is rarely reasoned logically, and you can't help but notice a deep-running theme of Class War. Thousands starving, millions threatened by floods, the middle East on the verge of war....who cares about a few damn birds. The Laird had a good point, that is, the balanceof nature has been so disrupted by now that managing the moors is the only viable alternative. Letting them lapse to a "natural" state would result in lands that are neither a real moor nor a wildlife management area. Got to agree with Patrick Stevens really - keeping birds in spaces of around a foot cubed and then killing them sounds a lot more nasty than shooting a few every year that have lived in far better conditions than even free range chickens. I question the morals of anyone who eats meat killed for him, rather than being willing to take the responsibility himself. I cannot say I am a fan of grouse shooting - to me the idea of killing a living creature for fun is repellent. However, I am far more concerned about people imposing their morality on others where there are no objective reasons to do so, and this is why I cannot condemn grouse shooting either. Well to my mind grouse shooting is no more savage than Dear Mother nature. Animals hunt other animals for food. We simply use a gun, somewhat more quicker most of the time. Mother Nature is savage, who are we to put ourselves above and judge morality, simply because we are human? | See also: 11 Aug 02 | England 12 Aug 00 | UK 11 Aug 00 | Scotland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top UK stories now: Links to more UK stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
