| Thursday, 1 August, 2002, 00:17 GMT 01:17 UK Protest threat over disease curbs ![]() Restrictions were intended to stop the spread of disease Farmers angry at the government's continued restrictions on animal movements are threatening to bring the country to a standstill on 12 August. They say one of the rules introduced during the foot-and-mouth crisis is making it impossible for them to trade their animals. The rule means that no livestock can be moved from a farm within 20 days of an animal being brought onto the premises. An anonymous group is now calling on farmers to protest against the restrictions by using tractors to block traffic and take action against major companies. They are trying to win backing by circulating leaflets at major sheep fairs. Peaceful protests The rule being challenged is known as the 20-day-standstill and was introduced to prevent the spread of the disease around the country. One Devon farmer who is in touch with the protest organisers says they are highly professional in their approach, although the protests will be peaceful. Agriculture Minister Lord Whitty told BBC Radio 4's Farming Today that the Government would not respond to threats. Prime Minister Tony Blair is due to carry out a number of engagments in Cumbria on Thursday. He is expected to visit areas affected by last year's foot-and-mouth outbreak. He will then join his family for a short holiday in the north of England. |
