A woman questioned in connection with the murder of a boy whose mutilated torso was found in the River Thames has been bailed by police.

The remains of the small boy, thought to be of African origin, was recovered from the river in London last September.

The finding sparked a major police inquiry which reached as far as South Africa and included an appeal by Nelson Mandela.

The boy is thought to have been five or six years old when he died, and was named Adam by officers.

On Tuesday, police arrested a woman in her 30s in Glasgow's Pollokshaws area.

She was taken to a south London police station for questioning.

Scotland Yard said she was bailed to return on a date towards the end of August.

A spokesman added: "The Metropolitan Police carried out the arrest with the assistance of Strathclyde Police.

"The woman lives in Glasgow and is of West African origin. She is married but living alone at present."

Police had sought help from police in South and West Africa to investigate the theory the boy had been subject to a voodoo killing or a "muti" murder.
