Members of the public will now be able to check, every year, exactly how the Queen spends her �7.9m allowance.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that her civil list accounts will now be published annually, instead of every 10 years.

It is believed the Queen is hoping to build on the huge success of the Jubilee celebrations, by being more "open".

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said the new disclosures were "a Royal household initiative that has been discussed with the Treasury since the mid 90s".

The most recent accounts will be placed in the Commons library on 27 June.

The civil list is the annual payment by Parliament to the monarch and other royals.

It covers staff wages, the cost of running the households and entertaining heads of state.

Alan Williams MP, a Labour member of the public accounts committee (PAC), has criticised the move as a "halfway house which will only lead to suspicion".

He has reportedly demanded the civil list be subject to scrutiny by the PAC and the National Audit Office as well.

Rich List

The Jubilee celebrations were interpreted by some as a boost in popularity for the royals, and this latest move as a further attempt to modernise the monarchy.

Publishing the civil list will be one of the last developments for Sir Michael Peat, who leaves as keeper of the privy purse in August, to become private secretary to the Prince of Wales.

Mr Peat is credited with saving millions of pounds.

The Queen's private wealth is unspecified

Civil list payments have been restricted to the Queen, Queen Mother and Prince Philip since 1993 and until now, they were only published every 10 years.

A further allowance of �27m, paid by Parliament for the upkeep of the palaces and transport, is already openly accounted for.

In total, there is �34.9m paid each year out of public money.

The Queen does not reveal her private wealth, estimated by the Sunday Times Rich List to be �275m.
