Barrymore pool death case closed
Michael Barrymore
Barrymore: Has received drug and alcohol counselling
Detectives investigating the death of a man found in entertainer Michael Barrymore's swimming pool have said no charges will be brought.

Stuart Lubbock, 31, of Harlow, Essex, was declared dead shortly after being found in his underwear in the pool at Barrymore's home in nearby Roydon on 31 March last year.

Post-mortem tests showed he had drowned, and had also suffered severe sexual injuries.

Police said Mr Lubbock had spent the previous evening at a nightclub in Harlow and had returned to the presenter's home in a taxi with the star and a number of other men.

In the weeks following Mr Lubbock's death Mr Barrymore, 49, was arrested on suspicion of possession and supply of Class B drugs, possession of a Class A drug and allowing premises to be used for taking Class B drugs.

John Kenney, 31, of Blackpool, Lancashire, and Justin Merritt, 26, of Harlow, were arrested in connection with Mr Lubbock's death.

No charges were bought against any of the men but Mr Barrymore was subsequently cautioned for possession of cannabis and allowing his premises to be used for the smoking of the drug.

Return to TV

An Essex Police spokesman said that after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service it was decided to take no further action against anyone.

He said a file was being prepared for the coroner.

During the saga Mr Barrymore's career as a TV entertainer was held in doubt.

But in November LWT announced he had signed up for a further series of his ITV weekend show My Kind of Music.

Mr Barrymore, who is undergoing treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction, expressed remorse for Mr Lubbock's death, but said he had no idea how it happened.
