 | | Saturday, 24 November, 2001, 19:26 GMT UK journalist injured in Taleban blast  Andrea Catherwood was hit in the knee by shrapnel A British journalist has been injured in Afghanistan in a Taleban suicide attack, which killed three people and seriously wounded a Northern Alliance commander. ITV news correspondent Andrea Catherwood was hit in the knee by a piece of shrapnel from a hand grenade, but was not seriously hurt. She was in a Red Cross compound with Northern Alliance soldiers overseeing the surrender of around 500 mainly Pakistani Taleban fighters from the stronghold of Kunduz. Ms Catherwood told ITV News: "One of the foreign fighters pulled a pin in a grenade. "He blew himself up and killed the two fighters beside him and also seriously injured one of the Northern Alliance commanders."
A spokeswoman for ITN - which supplies the news to ITV - told BBC News Online Ms Catherwood was not in danger and had received medical treatment. Ms Catherwood was standing about 10 yards away from the explosion and was among several people who received minor injuries. The grenade was missed during a search of the Taleban troops after their surrender. ITN is understood to be making arrangements to take Ms Catherwood out of the area. | |
