After 18 months in the job, Michael Birkett, 51, says holiday makers flying in from the UK make him "ashamed to be British".

A Foreign Office official confirmed: "He will be leaving his post on Monday."

Mr Birkett was angered by the way young Brits behave when they flock to the island for sun, sex, booze and drugs.

A locally-recruited official, as opposed to a career diplomat, he was on duty on the island at the weekend, dealing with the problems of British visitors.

Mr Birkett is said to be divorced from his Spanish wife, and worked in Madrid as an accountant at the British Embassy for several years before he moved to Ibiza.

He is quoted in The Mail on Sunday, saying: "I have always been proud to be British but these degenerates are dragging us through the mud.

"The young people are out of control. I am so angry at the degrading behaviour and the bad name Britain is getting in Europe. I knew it was time to leave.
