| Thursday, 18 October, 2001, 21:18 GMT 22:18 UK Charles meets spies on Bin Laden's trail ![]() Staff at GCHQ constantly monitor communication networks Prince Charles visited a government intelligence centre on Thursday where he met spies involved in tracking down terrorism suspect Osama Bin Laden and his al-Qaeda henchmen. The Prince of Wales spent two hours at GCHQ in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, to see the work going on at the Government's listening station, which monitors communications all over the world. He wanted to acknowledge the "unsung" secretive work of spies at the base who are busy sifting information for clues as to the terrorists' whereabouts. GCHQ constantly monitors calls and e-mails for any potential threat being planned against the UK.
A spokeswoman for St. James's Palace said: "This was His Royal Highness's first visit and he spent two hours meeting staff and being briefed on a range of intelligence-related subjects. "His Royal Highness wanted to acknowledge and encourage the important and often unsung work done by everyone in GCHQ as part of our national intelligence gathering and security requirements." |
