| Thursday, 11 October, 2001, 01:30 GMT 02:30 UK Barrymore given drugs caution ![]() The star has been formally cautioned over cannabis use Police have cautioned entertainer Michael Barrymore for drugs offences. Detectives have been investigating the death of a 31-year-old man found last March at the star's Essex home. Police said Mr Barrymore, 49, of Roydon, Essex, had been officially cautioned for possessing cannabis and for allowing premises to be used for the smoking of cannabis. He had been on police bail and was due to be further interviewed on 24 October. Interview A police spokeswoman said he had requested an interview on Wednesday and the result of that interview was that he had been cautioned.
Two men were arrested on suspicion of murder and are still on police bail. They are John Kenney, 31, from Blackpool, a close friend of Mr Barrymore, and Justin Merrit, 26, from Harlow. Mr Barrymore was never under suspicion of involvement in Mr Lubbock's death. Relief The Essex Police spokeswoman said Barrymore had voluntarily attended Stansted Airport Police Station with a lawyer shortly after 1700BST. The entertainer's solicitor David Corker issued a statement saying: "Following a short interview he was informed by Essex Police that the police investigation of him had been terminated, and his police bail would be immediately cancelled.
"Michael Barrymore expressed his relief that today marks the end of any police investigation involving him. "We have made it clear to the police that if anything more is required of him he will co-operate in any way he can." 'Minimal' possession In June, Mr Barrymore was arrested on suspicion of a total of four offences - possession and supply of a class B drug, possession of a class A drug and allowing premises to be used for the taking of a class B drug. Police said on Wednesday that following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, allegations relating to the supply of a class B drug and the possession of a class A drug were not being pursued. Under drug laws, a caution can only be issued if the amount of drugs a person is accused of possessing in "minimal". A caution can also only be issued if a person admits guilt. Police said that in Mr Barrymore's case a file had been considered by the CPS. |
