There have been reports of hardline Islamic groups in Jakarta and elsewhere issuing threats to kill foreigners.

Megawati Sukarnoputri's government has vowed to take action in the event of any violence but there are already reports of demonstrations outside the US embassy in Jakarta.

The Foreign Office has not yet changed its advice on travel to Saudi Arabia despite the closure of the US Embassy there for a safety review.

A spokesman said: "We are keeping the situation under close review there and in a number of countries.

"If anything changed we would react immediately."

Advice on travel to Afghanistan remains the same, all Britons having already been told to leave the country.

Fast-moving events

The Foreign Office has been advising against travel to Pakistan and has told Britons in the North-West Frontier Province, Baluchistan and the Northern Areas to leave immediately.

The spokesman said: "We are not aware of any specific threat to British nationals overseas.

"But British nationals are advised to keep a low profile, maintain a high level of vigilance, avoid situations where there might be tension and stay in touch with fast-moving events until the situation clarifies.

"Demonstrations and public events should be avoided."
