| Friday, 21 September, 2001, 12:31 GMT 13:31 UK Hancock nets Sir Stan's medal ![]() Matthews was known as the "Wizard of Dribble" TV comedian Nick Hancock has paid �20,000 at auction for the FA Cup winner's medal awarded to Sir Stanley Matthews in 1953. Hancock, the host of BBC1's show They Think It's All Over and a Stoke City fanatic, said he was delighted with the purchase. The medal was among an array of Matthews items on sale at Sotheby's Football Memorabilia auction in London. Other items included his strip from the 1953 final, which fetched �9,500.
The medal and kit were from one of the FA Cup's greatest-ever matches - dubbed the "Stanley Matthews Final". The game acquired that title, even though Stan Mortensen scored a hat-trick for Blackpool to help them beat Bolton 4-3. Matthews also played for his home town side, Stoke City, and in 1961 won a Football League Division Two championship medal with them. Hancock, who is a keen private collector of football memorabilia, also the championship medal for �2,000. Proceeds from the sale are being donated by Matthews's son to the Professional Footballers' Association benevolent fund. Stanley Junior, a former young British tennis star now lives in America where he owns the biggest indoor and outdoor tennis facility on the East Coast. The collection of Matthews memorabilia fetched a total of more than �50,000. |
