| Wednesday, 19 September, 2001, 17:02 GMT 18:02 UK Seaside centre to woo surfers ![]() The surf centre will be built at Fistral beach A 1.8m centre dedicated to surfing is being created at one of Newquay's beaches to boost tourism. A tourist information office and surf history museum will be among the attractions at Fistral Beach International Surfing Centre. The complex will also house a restaurant, crche, hire centre, beach cafe, toilets and changing rooms. It is hoped the centre will bring in an extra 15,000 visitors and another five international events and competitions to the Cornish resort each year.
It should also generate an estimated 450,000 a year for Newquay and create 25 jobs. The Fistral centre is part of a new private-public partnership whereby Britannic Industries runs the facilities on the council-owned beach. Restormel District Council leader, John Weller, stressed that the partnership would not compromise the council. 'Investing in quality' "We are not giving up control or ownership of the beach in any way or form, or the access," he said. "It is about investing and bringing up the quality of beaches in the UK." Work on the centre is due to begin before Christmas. When completed, it will be used by the British Surfing Association, lifeguards, community groups, training organisations and other beach users. A separate scheme to build a new offshore reef to generate better surfing waves off Newquay will be a further boost to the resort. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top UK stories now: Links to more UK stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
