Lauren death trial hears from doctor
Lauren Wright
Lauren Wright: "Severe medical problems"
A consultant has told a murder trial that a six-year-old girl would "probably" have survived if she had been taken to hospital on the morning of her death.

Lauren Wright died at her home in Welney, Norfolk, on 6 May last year.

Her stepmother Tracey Wright, 31, and her father Craig Wright, 38, both deny manslaughter and wilful neglect.

Accident and emergency consultant Graham Cook told Norfolk Crown Court that Lauren would have suffered severe pain in the five days between suffering a blow to her stomach and her death.

Jurors were read a report from Mr Cook, a medical trauma expert, who was unable to attend the trial after undergoing surgery.

The court was told he had not seen Lauren before or after her death and his report was based on evidence from other doctors who had examined her body, which included the post-mortem examination.

Mr Cook said: "On the morning of her death, if Lauren had received medical care in hospital she probably would have survived."

The post-mortem revealed part of her digestive system had been crushed as a result of a kick or punch to her abdomen.

'Blind eye'

Prosecutors also allege the girl had 60 bruises on her body.

Mr Cook is clinical director of surgery and director and consultant of accident and emergency services at Maidstone Hospital, Kent.

He said: "This child would have developed severe medical problems as a result of the obstruction, as a result of the trauma afflicted."

He estimated the time between the injury and death would have been between three and five days.

It is alleged Tracey Wright spitefully abused the girl, while Craig Wright "turned a blind eye".

The trial continues.
