The stately home - famous for its safari park - already has five mazes and labyrinths, including the world's longest hedge maze. Now viewers of the BBC's Blue Peter television programme are being invited to help design another maze. Estate spokesman Florence Wallace said the winnng design must be highly unusual. She said: "Lord Bath is obviously really into mazes.
The winning maze will be built over the coming winter. Longleat's existing mazes range from the traditional to the surreal. The mirror maze is styled on the fabled search of the Holy Grail. Visitors are invited to pretend they are knights of the Round Table embarking on a great quest. Wild sounds On their journey through a "dark forest", the knights see the sword Excalibur mysteriously rise up and then disappear. Green Men stare out from trees and wild sounds ring through the forest. Visitors unwittingly trigger off lightning and thunder.
It also appears to be three times larger than the historic coach house in which it was built. The hedge maze is made up of more than 16,000 English yew trees. Guiness Book of Records declared it the world's longest - with 1.69 miles of paths - after it was extended in 1999. Visitors take an average 90 minutes to complete it. The Blue Peter competition closes on 27 September, with the judging due on 10 October. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top UK stories now: Links to more UK stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
