| Tuesday, 18 September, 2001, 15:21 GMT 16:21 UK Confiscated hand luggage on show ![]() Just a small part of the haul of 20,000 items An estimated 20,000 sharp items have been confiscated from passengers at Heathrow Airport amid safety fears after the US terror attacks. A sample of the haul, made up of hundreds of household objects, including Swiss army knives, pointed brooches, knitting needles, nail files, scissors and corkscrews, has been put on show. Officials confiscated them from passengers during searches by security guards at Terminal 4 over two days, adding to departure delays. Heathrow chiefs hope putting some of the items on display will raise awareness about new, more stringent safety measures imposed after the hijacked planes crashed in the US on 11 September. Paul Fox, the airport's safety and security director, said the items seized could not be returned as they would have to be destroyed.
"Clearly any of these items could be used as a weapon and pose a threat. We want to make sure that doesn't happen." The list of banned passenger items includes toy or replica guns (plastic or metal), as well as household cutlery and knives with blades of any length. Also banned are letter openers, tradesmen's tools, darts, and sports goods such as rackets, cricket bats and golf clubs. Passengers found with these items will be asked to place them in their hold luggage or have them confiscated if they have only hand luggage. |
