Policeman escapes speeding prosecution
Detective Superintendent Adrian Roberts
Adrian Roberts had his speeding ticket withdrawn
A senior policeman who said he could not remember if he was driving when his car was caught on a speed camera will not face prosecution.

A car belonging to Detective Superintendent Adrian Roberts, the head of Middlesbrough CID, was caught exceeding a speed limit in Stockton-on-Tees in April.

He was issued with a 60 fixed penalty but it was later withdrawn after Mr Roberts said he could not recall if he was driving at the time.

A review of the case by Cleveland police has concluded that Mr Roberts will not face prosecution.

There has been a full review into this matter and it is now closed

Della Cannings, assistant chief constable of Cleveland Police

Mr Robert's white Citroen AX was caught travelling above the 30mph speed limit on April 8 2001.

The case was reviewed by Assistant Chief Constable Della Cannings after public concerns were raised.

Ms Cannings said:"The key people involved each acted with the best intentions, with highest degrees of integrity and with no intent to improperly influence the outcome.

"There has been a full review into this matter and it is now closed."

Future decisions

Ms Cannings said public concerns had been recognised and future decisions involving senior officers would be made by a "chief officer".

Mr Roberts said: "The law provides safeguards for vehicle owners which, in this case, properly applied to me.

"I almost wish it hadn't."

"Now I just want to get on with my job where I have been grateful in the past for the support of the public and the media."

Up to 3,000 drivers are caught every month in the Cleveland police force area, leading to about 1m in fines a year being ploughed back into safety schemes.
