| Thursday, 30 August, 2001, 11:05 GMT 12:05 UK Humps are a pain in the back ![]() Hi-tech road humps deflate for law abiding motorists Bus drivers claim that driving over speed humps every day is causing them spinal injuries. Nearly 50 drivers on three routes through Thatcham, West Berkshire have signed a petition demanding the design of the humps be changed. The drivers say they are jolted up to 160 times on some driving shifts. The council is considering ways of reducing the problem. Bus driver Marcello Garbini, who started the petition, said the bumps were a serious problem.
"I don't know if it's the suspension of the vehicle or what it is, but on a bus you feel this bump a lot more than you would in a car. "You can appreciate if we do a 12-hour shift a day it doesn't do any good to our health." Possible solutions West Berkshire Council traffic managers said the 41 humps were introduced after pressure from local residents. Since they were installed there has been a 60% reduction in accidents. Keith Lock, leader of the council, said: "We are prepared to replace the humps with the cushioned ones gradually as we repair and resurface the roads. "We also recommend bus drivers to go at 15 mph over them to reduce the affect." The council will meet on Thursday evening to discuss possible solutions to the problem. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top UK stories now: Links to more UK stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
