 | | Wednesday, 29 August, 2001, 10:33 GMT 11:33 UK Size matters to a lobster  Barney the lobster is more than three feet long A lobster measuring almost a metre long has been saved from the pot by a chef who could not bring himself to cook it. William Cooper, head chef at the Kaspia restaurant in Mayfair, central London, said the 96 centimetres (3ft 1in) long lobster was too big to cook. Mr Cooper said: "It was too big and too beautiful to cook. I couldn't bring myself to do anything with it." The lobster, which could be more than 60 years old, had been caught off the coast of Cornwall and brought to London as part of the restaurant's regular delivery.
A marine expert at the aquarium, Liz Downey, said: "He's been through some trauma with being packed in ice and moved around so we want to release him as soon as we can. "We will drop him off in Cornwall, near where he was caught, as he really belongs in the sea." Barney is thought to be the largest lobster to be caught in Europe, though the biggest ever was trapped off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1977, measuring 106 centimetres (3ft 5 in) long. | |
