He jumped into the inflatable craft with two others after reports that three men were causing trouble at a waterfront bar in Newcastle. When police arrived the men had sped into the river where they collided with a Royal Naval Reserve training vessel carrying sea cadets. A six-strong team of Northumbria Police divers is scouring the River Tyne and the force helicopter has been drafted in to help. Police said the missing man was aged about 30 and is thought to be local but they have not released any other personal details.
"It is a tidal river and at low and high tide flows very quickly and this is hampering our search at the present time." The three cadets, aged between 11 and 16, and the two instructors from the nearby Royal Naval Reserve HMS Calliope were not injured in the collision. Two of the men from the dinghy were rescued and taken to hospital under police escort. One man is being questioned by police about the incident at 2020BST on 9 August. The other is still in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary where police say he will need corrective surgery for leg injuries. Northumbria Police said the three men took the 16-feet rigid inflatable dinghy after officers were called to reports of them causing trouble at the Quayside bar near the new Blinking Eye Millennium Bridge. | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top UK stories now: Links to more UK stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
