 | | Friday, 3 August, 2001, 10:14 GMT 11:14 UK UK 'works long hours at home'  Employees take laptops home to continue working Many workers are being forced to take work home with them despite efforts to tackle the UK's "long hours" culture, a TUC survey has found. Moves towards changes in working practices which would allow people to spend more time at home have failed, according to the report. Instead, staff are increasingly expected to take work home with them out of normal office hours, fuelling the UK's reputation for a culture of lengthy working days, the research suggested.
And home computers were likely to be used by stressed executives taking work home at weekends or in the evening, said the TUC. New technology was adding to work pressures rather than helping people balance their office and home lives. TUC deputy general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Employees in the UK already work the longest hours in Europe. "Now they are expected to take work home with them as well." "It seems the countries known for their high trust relationships at work and good work-life balance are happy to let staff work from home."
