| Thursday, 2 August, 2001, 16:37 GMT 17:37 UK New scheme to douse arson cases ![]() Arson causes millions of pounds of damage Fire services across the south-east of England have joined forces with the Arson Prevention Bureau and Crimestoppers in an attempt to tackle deliberate fire-raising. About 30 fires a day are thought to be started intentionally in the area. Throughout the campaign they aim to increase the number of telephone calls with information leading to the identification and conviction of arsonists. Jane Milne, chief executive of the Arson Prevention Bureau, said: "Arson is a major social and economic problem, causing loss of life, serious injury and widespread damage to property costing millions of pounds.
"So this initiative, which will hopefully lead to more information to help identify arsonists, is much needed." It is believed that in many cases work colleagues or members of the arsonist's family have information about the cause of a fire but are unwilling to come forward. The campaign will feature posters on fire engines giving the Crimestoppers number and message reminding people they are guaranteed anonymity. 'Biggest single cause' Posters will also be put up at arson sites and leaflets distributed to encourage people to contact Crimestoppers. Graham Meldrum, HM chief inspector fire services, said: "Arson is the largest single cause of major fires in the UK, causing about one in every six fire casualties. "This is one of many initiatives being undertaken in collaboration with fire services throughout the country to tackle fire starting in the community." The bureau is sponsoring the Crimestoppers campaign involving brigades in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey, and West Sussex. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top UK stories now: Links to more UK stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
