Paras fundraise for TA blast boy
Stephen Menary with the Parachute Regiment
Stephen Menary was presented with a bravery plaque
Troops from the Parachute Regiment have marched through central London to raise money for an army cadet injured when a bomb exploded.

Stephen Menary, 15, was blinded and lost part of his left arm after he picked up a torch packed with explosives outside a Territorial Army base, in White City, west London in February.

More than 80 soldiers took part in the 10-mile charity march to help raise money towards the cost of caring for Stephen.

The troops from B Company of the 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment also presented the teenager with a plaque in recognition of his bravery.

30lb packs

Stephen, from East Acton, thanked the soldiers who strapped on 30lb packs for the march from Horse Guards Parade to Battersea Park.

Already 300,000 has been raised for the Cadet Stephen Menary Fund but the aim is to reach 500,000.

Stephen said: "It is very nice of the Paras and of everyone else who has helped out a lot."

Rehabilitation

The teenager is undergoing intensive rehabilitation at St Dunstan's Centre for blind ex-service personnel in Brighton.

"I am doing mobility exercises, cooking, woodwork and computing. It is a lot of help," he said.

Stephen Menary: Thanked the soldiers for their support

The teenager, who had already lost the sight of one eye from a rare form of cancer when he was four years old, has already said he is not angry about the attack.

Instead he said he was glad it was him rather than a smaller child.

Police suspect that there may have involvement by the Irish republican terrorist group the Real IRA in the attack on the TA base.

A BBC Crimewatch special will be screened on 15 August in a fresh bid to catch the culprits responsible for the explosion on 22 February.

Anyone with information can ring the police on 0800 789321.
