Sunday is officially Yorkshire Day when people in that proud county will be sampling the traditional delights on offer, such as Yorkshire pudding, Tetley bitter, and of course the views.

But what is it that makes Yorkshire so special for the people who live there?

BBC Leeds asked its viewers to nominate their favourite spots in the county.

Top of their list was the North York Moors Railway - nominated by Brian Rushton and Richard Brown - which is a steam railway that runs 18 miles from Grosmont to Pickering through spectacular scenery.

Beverley Minster - more than 550 years old

Beverley Minster in the East Riding of Yorkshire was Joan Roseveare's choice.

She returns there annually, along with her two sisters, one who comes all the way from Canada.

The cathedral, which was was started in 1220 but not finished until 200 years later, is full of ornate carvings.

One of the Brimham Rocks

Helen Livingston chose Brimham Rocks near Ripon. The unusually-shaped formations have been given individual names over the years, including the Indian's Turban, the Dancing Bear and Yorkshire's own Sphinx.

They are made of millstone grit which was worn away during the ice age.

The view from Boston Park

Susan Richardson chose a rather less well-known spot - Boston Park in Rotherham - where she, her two dogs and friends like to walk.

"Even with quite an industrial view, it's quite beautiful in its way," she says.

In the evening, "the sunsets are absolutely fantastic."

But for Andrew who e-mailed the BBC, his favourite place in Yorkshire is the piece of grass with a sign above it reading "Lincolnshire."

Other nominated spots:

• Spurn Point was nominated by Dorothy Garforth. She spent many happy weekends there with her children, who return there still.
• New Earswick swimming pool in York was nominated by Amy Gibson, who has swum there since the age of 4 or 5 and now teaches children to swim.
• Tropical World in Leeds was nominated by June Holliday, who admires the butterflies you can find there - "they don't have a care in the world."
• Winifred and Cyril Peace nominated Staithes which they have just revisited after a happy holiday 50 years ago.
