| Monday, 9 July, 2001, 10:44 GMT 11:44 UK Bank accounts for Big Issue sellers ![]() Big Issue vendors have security problems A bank is relaxing its security regulations to allow Big Issue sellers in Manchester to deposit their earnings. It is usually impossible for homeless vendors to open a bank account without two pieces of official identification. The vendors, who earn money selling the magazine, will use a letter of recommendation plus a seller's badge to open an account with the Co-operative Bank. Margaret Quinn, media relations manager for the Big Issue in the North Trust said: "Our vendors are sleeping rough and are vulnerable to being mugged and having their money stolen. 'Better future' "If they have identification it gets sodden and in the long term they cannot plan or save to make a better future." Under the scheme the Co-operative Bank in Manchester City Centre hopes to provide an account for an initial 20 to 30 homeless vendors. Bank spokesman Dave Smith said: "Passports, driving licences and utility bills are not available to many vendors. "We see it as a long term thing, and hopefully these people will stay with us if they get a job. Stepping stone "Selling the Big Issue is a stepping stone to help people get back into more mainstream life," he added. For every magazine they sell, Big Issue vendors are allowed to keep 60p. They will be able to use night deposit boxes for their earnings. If the scheme is a success, it may be rolled out elsewhere in the UK. One vendor, Joseph, 38, told BBC News Online: "Two weeks ago I was robbed myself. "65 was taken, and it took me more than a day to collect it. "When you carry that much money about people are tempted to rob you," he added. |
