Consumers are being given more protection against cowboy builders with the launch of a new government-backed quality mark.

The scheme includes a new register which records the names of builders and tradesmen who reach the standard required by the mark.

Customers can then check their credentials by calling a low cost telephone number or tapping into a new website.

Complaints about cowboy builders have been rising steadily, with around 100,000 complaints every year, according to the Department of Trade and Industry.

'Clear signal'

Construction minister Brian Wilson said the mark, which was being piloted in Birmingham and Somerset, would bring "peace of mind" for home-owners.

He said: "Bringing the quality mark scheme to the people of Birmingham sends a clear signal to cowboy builders that we will not stand for shoddy workmanship or consumer rip-offs.

"The scheme provides a simple, cheap and reliable way for householders to find reputable builders.

"It will empower householders and reward good tradesmen."

Ministers are hoping to launch the scheme nationally at the end of estimated six-month pilots.
