| Wednesday, 4 July, 2001, 14:45 GMT 15:45 UK Airport seeks to blend in ![]() The scheme aims to improve access to the airport East Midlands Airport has unveiled plans to reduce its impact on the environment. The airport's Landscape Strategy covers a range of projects aimed at integrating the airport into its rural surroundings at Castle Donington. Officials said that although the growth of the airport was vital to the region's economy, its impact on the environment also had to be minimised. The first initiative is a wildlife walk on the northern edge of the airfield. It was opened by the BBC's Countryfile presenter John Craven with help from children from a local school.
Ecological surveys have found areas of diverse habitats which, despite the noise of planes, are home to numerous rare birds and animals. Hedgehogs from the Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital have been released back into the wild on the site where special hedgehog hotels have been built for them. Will Heynes, the airport's technical director, said: "There is no doubt that future airport growth is vital to the economic wellbeing of the East Midlands region. "This preliminary step is an exciting move forward and early visitors will be surprised at the already established wealth of wildlife. "It is a project we will develop in years to come." |
