Conker trees controversially earmarked for the axe have been given a temporary reprieve.

Norwich City Council says it will look again at each of the seven horse chestnut trees before making a final decision on their fate.

The trees hit the headlines when the council said it was to chop them down because they posed a risk to children and drivers.

Now the authority has apologised to local residents for failing to consult them on the issue.

Children 'at risk'

The council says it will look at each tree in turn and talk to nearby residents before making a final decision.

It wanted to remove the trees in Bluebell Road for a number of safety reasons.

It says the conkers are a danger to pedestrians, who could slip on the mulch.

In addition, there are fears that children gathering conkers are at risk from vehicles.

The trees were due to be chopped down over the next few weeks.

But local residents condemned the decision as "daft".

At a special meeting on Monday night, the council apologised and agreed to postpone its action.

But it has warned that a number of trees appear to be diseased.
